Since studying technical illustration 1980s Steven Mace worked tirelessly to establish an artistic goal. In 1997 Mace started working with hardwood; this was the beginning of his passion for sculpture in rich wood.
Having spent several years experimenting and learning the delicate skill of carving the living material, Mace joined ‘Raft’, a Weymouth art group, and participated in several group shows. Subsequent success encouraged Mace to approach the CASS sculpture foundation, affiliated to the famous sculpture park at Goodwood. Several of his pieces were on display at their central London gallery, and are now on rotating display at Goodwood itself.
I have spent many hours looking at Mace’s sculptures, both in the gallery and at my home and his technical skill never ceases to amaze me. Each unique work of art is designed specifically for the piece of exotic hard wood from which it is carve. The precision and elegance of Mace’s sculptures make them both classically beautiful and artistically perfect.
