David’s fascination with museums and galleries forms the basis of many of his paintings. He paints people in museums; they are not posed portraits but mere glances at individuals engrossed in thought and study. We stand behind the viewer, seeing what they see, just separated by the picture plane.
David’s mastery of Still Life also is quite astounding. A vase of flowers, an old tin jug, cutlery scattered across a table; all his paintings are executed with a knowing eye and skilful hand. Time passes slowly, each object revealing a little mystery as our perception of the painting deepens.
