‘As my primary interest is the representation of line in a three dimensional from and its ability to dictate movement and theory inspiration can be taken from a variety of sources such as nature (the sea, wildlife and organic structures and patterns) and mathematical principles (symmetry, Möbius strips etc).
The surface of my sculpture is very important and a constant inspiration in itself and although the figure of wood, because of its unpredictable nature can often conflict with line and form, marrying the three elements together is the challenge that drives the passion.’
Steven Mace
August 2005
Since studying technical illustration at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art in the 1980’s Steven Mace worked tirelessly to establish an artistic goal. In 1997 Mace started working with hardwood, this was the beginning of his passion for sculpture in rich wood. Having spent several years experimenting and learning the delicate skill of carving the living material Mace joined ‘Raft’, a Weymouth art group, and participated in several group shows. The subsequent success encouraged Mace to approach the ‘CASS’ sculpture foundation, linked to the famous sculpture park at Goodwood. Several of his pieces can be seen at their gallery in London. The Cass commissioning process gives younger sculptors their first opportunity to produce work on a monumental scale. This invariably provides the artist with sufficient confidence to seek out and undertake ambitious commissions elsewhere.
