Carol McDermott
Carol McDermott paints the beautiful and remote countryside of northern Cumbria. The wild scenery of the fells provide a constant source of inspiration. Her studio, perched on the edge of this fell landscape offers her enviable views which she paints with a truly enchanted eye. Her love of nature and genuine connection with the environment which she paints fills each canvas.
Each painting is of a specific location, often known only to people local to the area. Carol invites the view to take a glimpse of the beauty of creation that surrounds her. The rolling hills and empty moorland inspire her to paint. Her strong brush strokes on heavy linen canvas gives her work a sense of bold immediacy. The ever changing skies and threatening storms are here controlled but not tamed.
Carol also paints more intimate ‘portraits’ of the forest. These mysterious canvases offer us an unusual perspective at ground level. One could almost imagine the fairies and pixies of our childhood hiding behind a foxglove or wild orchid, the sun breaking through the tree tops dappling the forest floor.
