Jacquie Jones

The Newmarket based British artist Jacquie Jones is widely recognised as one of the foremost artists in her specialist field of equestrian art. She began her life in the equine world working as a stable girl and rider for the top flat race trainer Sir Henry Cecil. Being surrounded by the beautiful thoroughbreds at the stable yard awakened her artistic talent and she soon spent every free moment sketching and studying the animals in her care.

Although she is a self taught artist, her natural understanding of composition and her in-depth knowledge of horses enable her to create exquisite paintings of horses in motion. She captures the very essence of the racing world – the excitement of the last furlong and the physical exertion of the horse and jockey.

There is a sense of apparent ease to Jacquie’s work. The agility and speed of a racehorse is effortlessly captured in her paintings.  Whether working with watercolours or oils Jacquie controls the paint much like a rider controls a horse. She is able to use colour sparingly, relying on strong, bold lines to mark out the forms and contours of the painting.

Jacquie Jones has undertaken many important commissions for several top trainers and owners including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sir Henry Cecil. Her love and understanding of horses is evident in her horse portraiture. She is able to depict the individual character of a horse, through the glint of an eye or the way its head is held.

Jacquie’s work is highly sought after not just in the world of racing. It can be seen an countless private collections across the world including that of the British Royal Family, The Marchioness of Taverstock, Lord Howland, Sir Henry Cecil and the ruling Royal family in Dubai who own twelve of her paintings.

In 1998 Jacquie was appointed the first artist in residence to the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket and has had several successful exhibitions in Dubai and the UAE. She travels extensively, especially in the Middle East, often as a guest of a trainer or owner. Her reputation as one of Britain’s greatest living equestrian artists ensures that she is always able to paint her muse. The joy she felt sketching horses as a young stable girl has grown into a lifelong passion.
